I just bought one from tesco because I heard they were delicious.
I would like a dessert recipe that involved plantain.
Also, is there anything I should know about it before I cook it? At the moment the skin is green does that mean it's unripe?Does anyone know any delicious recipes that involve plantain?
Now let me see. I don鈥檛 know how your friend cooked his or her plantain but here are some ways you can prepare yours.
We have yellow and green plantain. So deepening on the occasion or event you could choose. But from your expression I guess it was yellow plantain. Make sure the yellow plantain is yellow and semi-hard.
Method One
Fried Plantain.
First Pill the Plantain,
You cut a little off the top and bottom with a knife. Then you cut the skin straight down, so you can open the plantain like a Jacket. When the plantain is naked like a banana. Use your knife and cut it slim. I wish I had a diagram for the cutting because there are three ways of doing it.
Salt the cut plantain, not too much salt a little and use your hand to spread the salt over all the cut pieces of plantain.
Make sure your oil is dip fry hot. If you have a dip fryer put the plantain in the dip fry metal holder, and deep in to the boiling oil. It is like frying chips.
When its Golden brown bring it out and let it cool and you can eat like that or with a nice semi-spicy soup.
Method Two.
Boil plantain
First cut the top and bottom.
You can then pill the plantain, and then cut it to a favourable size [Potato size] and steam it or boil it, till its nice and soft.
You can also leave the plantain skin on with you cut it. But make sure you wash the plantain under running water.
When you steam or boil it you can then use your fingers to pill the jacket. Its like boiling potatoes with the skin.
Why boil with the skin? The plantain absorbs the nutrients from the skin and you get some healthy stuff.
You can eat like that or with a nice soup.
If you are Caribbean or African I could tell you some more especially if you had given birth.
Anyway try the above for now. If you like it give me a shout out.Does anyone know any delicious recipes that involve plantain?
if you know any domincians ask them how to make mongo or ask an hispanic.
Fry them...then put them over vanilla ice cream with carmel sauce...mmmm...they are best that way!
I've never cooked plantain before, but I had the most AMAZING plantain dish in the dominican republic..... there were mashed plantains on the bottom, then it was baked with ham and cheese on top of the plantains. It was sooooooo good. I know this post won't really help you at all, I'm just reminiscing.... mmmm..... hope you find a good recipe!
They're supposed to be green, as I understand it, so don't worry - it's not unripe. The only plantain recipe I have is to peel it, slice it into 2cm thick discs, and gently fry in butter.
I've never heard of sweet plantain recipes, but good luck - it sounds very unusual!

Just think of it as a banana and think of all the things you can do to make a banana taste good. If the skin is green, you may want to wait a day or so first. If is connected to the banana family. You should definitely peel it before cooking. You can also fry them.
Yummeeee.
cut them in half,, fry in some butter and put some maple syrup.,
PLANTAIN PICADILLO PIE WITH CHEESE
A layer of sliced fried plantains forms the crust; picadillo 鈥?a Latin dish of ground meat, tomatoes, and spices 鈥?makes a savory filling. This would be a lovely supper with bread and a salad.
Crust
1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil
4 large semi-ripe (yellow-black) plantains, peeled, cut on diagonal into 2- to 3-inch-long by 1/2-inch-thick ovals.
Filling
1 cup finely chopped red onion
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1 pound ground beef chuck (80% lean)
1/3 cup tomato paste
1/3 cup golden raisins, chopped
1/3 cup pimiento-stuffed green olives, coarsely chopped, plus 3 tablespoons brine from jar
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 tablespoon yellow cornmeal
8 ounces queso fresco,* crumbled, divided
4 pimiento-stuffed green olives, drained, sliced
For crust:
Heat oil in heavy large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Working in batches, add plantain slices and cook until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side. Using slotted spoon, transfer slices to sheet of foil. Pat plantains with paper towels and cool. Reserve 2 tablespoons oil from skillet for filling.
Line 9-inch-diameter glass pie dish with single layer of cooled plantains; reserve remaining for garnish. Using fingers, firmly press slices together to seal any gaps. Set crust aside.
For filling:
Heat reserved 2 tablespoons oil in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic and saut茅 until onion is translucent, about 4 minutes. Add beef and saut茅 until brown, breaking into small pieces with back of fork, about 5 minutes. Add tomato paste, raisins, green olives, oregano, cinnamon, cumin, and allspice and simmer until most liquid evaporates and filling is thick, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Mix in cornmeal.
Preheat oven to 450掳F. Crumble half of queso fresco over crust, then spoon in picadillo filling and press to compact. Sprinkle evenly with remaining queso fresco. Bake pie until cheese is melted and filling is heated through, about 25 minutes. Garnish center of pie with sliced olives and some plantain slices. Cool 10 minutes and serve.
*Queso fresco, also known as queso blanco, is available at some supermarkets and Latin markets. A mild feta cheese can be substituted.
Makes 6 to 8 servings
